A reader’s guide to marble, published by Dotto

The name marble covers every carbonate stone that takes a good polish

Marble is a limestone whose calcite has been recrystallised, and the name also covers carbonate stones that take a good polish. Heritage South Australia’s guidelines single acid out for marble and limestone.

General information from Australian heritage and geological sources, much of it written for old and heritage stone, not trade advice.

Where the advice comes from

The cleaning guidance here comes from heritage bodies in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.

The stone, its quarries and its caves come from geological, parks and museum sources, and the buildings each marble dressed come from state heritage registers and plans of management.

The care rules were written for old and heritage stone. Some speak of historic graves and monuments, and one set applies to items listed on New South Wales’s State Heritage Register.

None of them is written for a new kitchen bench or a new floor.
